WakeMed Christmas tree lighting and activities.

This is the second year we have attended the WakeMed Christmas event and we have had a great time both years. It is held at the WakeMed north hospital inside the main lobby and outside in the courtyard (free parking). Find all the details here. The main draw for us was getting to see Santa and they print you one free photo on the spot to take home. There was a bit of a wait in line but not terrible. We were able to enjoy free hot cocoa (or coffee, or milk) and cookies while we waited. The Santa pictures are set up outside and this year it was barely even chilly out. Santa himself was awesome. He really looks the part (real beard, rosy cheeks), and I can just tell that he loves kids and enjoys doing it. Part of the extended wait is because he takes some time with each child, talking with them and getting a good picture. And while Sully didn’t smile he also didn’t cry which is really the best we could have hoped for. I fell like Santa pictures can get really expensive but they are really nice to have so even just one free one is awesome. Both years Jared worked his magic and scanned the photo to use on our Christmas card, and it turned out fine. It’s nice to be able to share it with our family who do not live near us.

In addition to Santa and the treats they also have a movie playing (Rudolf), a DJ leading activities with the kids, a snow machine, decorate a picture frame for your Santa photo, and various arts and crafts inside. We didn’t investigate the indoor arts and crafts area very much since Sully is a little young for them still. In passing there looked to be an ornament station, color your own pillowcase, and something else involving paint. We look forward to Sully being big enough to do all of it.

Twinkle the mascot. Sully was not sure about him, lol.

We actually missed the tree lighting. We couldn’t quite make it there in time. And while the whole event was free I did notice a station for toy donations. We recognized several of the doctors and nurses that work in Sullivan’s pediatrician’s office there volunteering. Everyone seemed very cheerful!

My only minor complaint would have to be that it was held on a Monday night from 6p-8:30p. A Friday or Saturday would be better for us, but we made it work. It was totally worth it.

Did you happen to attend? Will you mark your calendar for next year? We will be there for sure!
