My journey to investing in the stock market

I recently had a coworker open my eyes to the possibility of investing in the stock market and fast tracking my retirement savings. It is safe to say that I was a complete novice to all things investing, even how to get started period (is there a website that you just go to and start trading??). She was very helpful in getting me started on my journey and maybe I can help/inspire you, because you know if I can do it you certainly can too!

My unnamed coworker gave me my first book: Rule #1 by Phil Town. I dove right into it, couldn’t put it down, loved it, still carry it around with me for reference. I highly recommend it. Phil Town has become one of the main people I follow and try to listen to everything he says. I feel like he started from almost nothing, no real future plans and he has risen up to become this incredible investor/millionaire. I wanna be just like him when I grow up 😉

Phil’s book, Rule #1, got me started in investing. In fact, I made my first buy and sell (I made a $50 profit!) after only reading his book and using his website www.ruleoneinvesting.com Now I am looking to expand my knowledge and these are the books I have on my wish list, all of which are recommended by Phil:

I opened an IRA with Ameritrade but I don’t care for their app when it comes to monitoring stocks. Instead, I use the website MarketWatch almost daily to keep track of my portfolio and my watchlist. It’s user friendly, free, and has some current events news that I try to keep up with.

I have now sold my second stock and made a profit of $30 (a 50% return!). Doesn’t sound like much money really but I am still in my practice stage, feeling it out, seeing if I am cut out for this. So far so good! It’s very encouraging so far.

Another resource I really like is on YouTube- Investing Club. It’s a channel run by a young investor who also follows Phil Town and Warren Buffett. He is very candid about sharing specific stocks he owns and ones he is watching. He also shares specific numbers, what he would actually pay for a specific stock, ect. It’s still super important to do your own research and make your own decisions but he provides some great leads of what to look into. Check him out and let me know what you think.

I would be very willing/interested in discussing further details, giving and receiving advice. Let’s start a conversation.
