Boxcar- coffee and scoops in Knightdale NC

My husband and I actually had a date night the other day. Just the two of us. It was magical.

We took the opportunity to try a new local place we’ve never been before. Boxcar– coffee and scoops. Scoops of ice cream of course! Previously known as the Coffee Chamber (change of ownership we were told). We never visited when it was the Coffee Chamber.

Boxcar uses local ingredients and everything looked and sounded amazing. The menu isn’t huge, they offer: coffee, espresso drinks, ice cream, sundaes, sandwiches, soups, salads, and pastries. We were there for dessert and I already knew I wanted to try an Affogato. It is ice cream served with a shot of espresso on the side that is meant to be poured over the ice cream. I was previously familiar with this concept through Starbucks where you can get a frappacino affogato style, meaning they pour a hot espresso shot over your drink (delicious- I highly recommend trying it!). Well, the Boxcar affogato did not disappoint, see below.

I got the salted caramel affogato: vanilla ice cream, salted caramel drizzle, and espresso on the side. Jared got the advertised special: brownie bite affogato with brownie bites, butter pecan ice cream, and espresso. They were both amazing! They came in large mugs (helpful since I sipped a lot of mine), two scoops of ice cream, and a generous amount of espresso in a saucer for pouring. The espresso was very strong, but was balanced beautifully by the sweet ice cream. At $5, I thoroughly enjoyed it and will absolutely go back for more and to try some other items they offer (Belgian waffle sundae, I’m coming for you). Have you been? The place itself is very cutely decorated. It is very clean and new. It seems like a great place to hang out. The only strange thing, that Jared pointed out, was that there was no music playing. A seemingly minor detail, but it really made the place too quiet. I actually might mention it to someone next time if there is none playing again. Just a friendly suggestion.

While we were there we noticed a flyer for Sundae Funday: family story time series. Starting next Sunday (7/7) Boxcar is hosting a children’s story time with $1 off sundaes.
